Public Speaking – 9 Tips to Ensure That You Are Original
by: Tony Hall

When you come to the point of having to prepare a speech or presentation it can seem an incredibly daunting task. Clearly it is of upmost importance to prepare correctly and give the correct structure to your speech. Every good speech needs an opening that will grab everyone’s attention and make them sit up and listen. It must flow beautifully, so that you carry the audience along with you. And it should have an effective close to ensure that they each take away something truly meaningful. But to be a genuinely effective public speaker your talk must be original!

When you make a speech you really should be talking about a subject in which you are interested and that you understand. That way your knowledge and enthusiasm will shine through. But sadly it’s so easy to take short-cuts and to be lazy!

It’s amazing how many people will take what they believe to be the easy route and “borrow” someone else’s material. In fact there are books out there dedicated to providing speeches, such as those for the best man at a wedding. In some respects there’s nothing wrong with those books but the speeches should only really be used as a guide to the structure that your own speech might take.

Similarly you can get hold of books full of anecdotes. These tales are fine but you should use them sparingly to get the best effect. A speech full of other people’s anecdotes is not going to be a very good one. You may think using someone else’s work will make you into a successful speaker, but the way to come across as someone who is truly confident and convincing is to be original.

Doing so is actually very easy and will probably be far more effective than spending hours searching for something someone else has written that is suitable for you. It can also make the whole process of planning, preparing and then making your speech much more enjoyable and fulfilling.

So here are some ideas for being original:

1) Think about what you want to talk about and then name your topic specifically. That will help you to focus on the subject concerned.

2) Write down everything you can think of that you currently know about it. Grab plenty of paper and simply put down everything that comes to mind, with no editing at this stage. You can sort it later.

3) Identify where there are gaps in your knowledge and then set about doing some research. There are masses of resources at your disposal to help you to gather information. Books, magazines, newspapers, videos and DVDs will all provide you with a source of useful data. And, of course, surfing the web will open up boundless new opportunities for adding to your knowledge of your topic.

4) Then systematically sort through what you have written and identify the key ideas. Then put them into a logical sequence.

5) For each idea create a key point. Do a little editing and discard anything that you consider not to be totally relevant.

6) Work around each point adding in additional elements including statistics, illustrations and maybe one or two of those anecdotes. Give interest and value to each part.

7) Remember to create an opening for the speech relating to the topic. You need to grab your audience’s attention so a startling fact or a pertinent question is a good way to begin.

8) Equally, you need to end your speech effectively. So devise the close now so that you end with a call to action or a challenge for your audience to take away.

9) Then use the key points you identified to ensure you have a speech that flows and will hold your audience’s attention, carrying them from the opening to the close.

Talking about what you know in your own words will always be far more rewarding and will be a real boost to your confidence. It will enable you to present yourself as a knowledgeable and convincing speaker. And it will ensure that anyone in attendance will find your talk an enjoyable and beneficial experience.

So go on, be original!

Public Speaking – How to be Sure You Look and Sound Just Right
by: Tony Hall

Do you think that if you knew that you looked and sounded just right, that your confidence to get up and make a speech would be boosted? Would your public speaking fears be banished by having the knowledge that the way you present yourself reflects a confident and assured speaker to all those who see you? Well in my experience it most certainly would and I have a way that might just help.

You see when I first went on a presentation skills course many years ago I had no confidence at all in my own ability to speak in front of an audience. The mere thought of it would bring me out in a cold sweat and I would be overwhelmed by nerves. The idea of me giving an assured and confident presentation in front of any audience seemed ridiculous. But within a couple of days all that changed!

The course was very much hands-on and involved role play routines and we went through the whole process of putting together a presentation. We learned how to research it, plan it and how to give it the correct structure. Then we formed up into pairs and actually filmed each other doing our talk.

Now if you’ve ever heard your voice on a recording you will know how it always sounds totally different to how you expect. So you can imagine what it was like to sit and watch the recording of our films.

It was quite a shock to see myself, but it was also a real education.

I could look at how I stood, examine the movements I made, and despair at how little I smiled. I was also able to listen to the tone of my voice, see where I did or didn’t put pauses and hear the intonation and emphasis in my talk.

We had the chance to identify the good bits and to see where we could make changes to make it better. Then when we had done that we filmed it all over again.

The improvement was amazing and we got to keep the recordings so that we could show them to family and friends. When I showed mine the positive feedback was great and I’ve never looked back since. Seeing myself making that presentation really boosted my confidence and it can do the same for you.

So do whatever you can to get a way of filming yourself, you may even be able to set up a camcorder, or even just a webcam, and do it yourself if you prefer not to have anyone else present. I would recommend though that you involve someone you know and trust as their opinion will be invaluable.

Simply prepare a short speech, no more than five minutes, and film it. Then see how you look and sound. Examine the following:

- How you look.

- Do you smile enough?

- Your movements

- Your body language

- The tone of your voice

- Where and when you take pauses

- Your breathing

- Your intonation and pitch.

Decide what is good and what you can make better. Then do it all again, a number of times if you have to. Then, when you are happy with how you look and sound, be brave and show it to someone else. I’ll be very surprised if they are not full of praise and give you lots of positive feedback.

Then you can be proud and confident that you can get up and talk to anyone knowing that you’ll look and sound just right.

The Growth Of Cellphones
by: Jeff Lakie

Cellphones are quickly becoming an integral part of our lives. They increase the convenience factor, help us stay organized, and keep us in touch with the people that we love. They can also help us keep informed!

As cellphone technologies increase, cell phone manufacturers are finding new ways to pack great programs into their cellphones. One such program that is being built into cellphones now, and will increase in the future, is the RSS feed capability.

Having this capability will mean that your cellphone can act like an MP3 player, and perhaps you already have a cell phone that has MP3 player capabilities. But in a cellphone with RSS feed capabilities take the MP3 player format one step further.

The word “podcasting” was coined in 2004. It is a technology that no one heard about until recently but is gaining popularity at an exponential rate. A podcast is like a radio program that broadcasters create in an MP3 format and attach it to an RSS feed on their web site. Computers and cellphones with RSS feed capabilities can grab the MP3 file and download it automatically. This means that every time the podcaster makes a new show, your computer or your cell phone can automatically pick it up.

(A quick note on terminology: podcasts and punchcasts are virtually the same thing except that podcasts are typically the “radio show” that goes to your computer, while punch casts are considered the ones that end up on your cell phone, even if they are the same show in the same MP3 file.)

The value of listening to podcasts on your cell phone is tremendous. While most people have not heard of podcasts, there are literally thousands and thousands of podcasts out there, and each one is designed for a specific niche: the baseball enthusiast, a wine lover, a news junkie, an entrepreneur, and the list can go on and on. If you have a hobby or interest, you’ll probably find a podcasts on it… or 10 podcasts on it!

Aside from topics, podcasts vary in length and quality: just like television shows, they can have an interview format or a quiz show format or a monologue format, to name a few. They can be well done or poorly done.

Here’s how it works: you find the podcast you are interested in and subscribe on your cell phone (it’s free) and every time the podcaster creates a new podcast and attaches it to the RSS feed, it gets automatically loaded onto your phone.

So now you can stay on top of all the exciting news in your industry, or in a hobby or an area of interest that you might have and you can do it all on your cellphone!

The History Of Cellphones; Telefonos Moviles Just Began With Simple Telephones
by: A.Caxton

Here, with the extract of the book THE HISTORY OF THE TELEPHONE by Herbert N. Casson, we show where moviles, cell phones and pdas began. In that somewhat distant year 1875, when the telegraph and the Atlantic cable were the most wonderful things in the world, a tall young professor of elocution was desperately busy in a noisy machine-shop that stood in one of the narrow streets of Boston, not far from Scollay Square. It was a very hot afternoon in June, but the young professor had forgotten the heat and the grime of the workshop. He was wholly absorbed in the making of a nondescript machine, a sort of crude harmonica with a clock-spring reed, a magnet, and a wire. It was a most absurd toy in appearance. It was unlike any other thing that had ever been made in any country. The young professor had been toiling over it for three years and it had constantly baffled him, until, on this hot afternoon in June, 1875, he heard an almost inaudible sound–a faint TWANG–come from the machine itself.

For an instant he was stunned. He had been expecting just such a sound for several months, but it came so suddenly as to give him the sensation of surprise. His eyes blazed with delight, and he sprang in a passion of eagerness to an adjoining room in which stood a young mechanic who was assisting him.

“Snap that reed again, Watson,” cried the apparently irrational young professor. There was one of the odd-looking machines in each room, so it appears, and the two were connected by an electric wire. Watson had snapped the reed on one of the machines and the professor had heard from the other machine exactly the same sound. It was no more than the gentle TWANG of a clock-spring; but it was the first time in the history of the world that a complete sound had been carried along a wire, reproduced perfectly at the other end, and heard by an expert in acoustics.

That twang of the clock-spring was the first tiny cry of the newborn telephone, uttered in the clanging din of a machine-shop and happily heard by a man whose ear had been trained to recognize the strange voice of the little newcomer. There, amidst flying belts and jarring wheels, the baby telephone was born, as feeble and helpless as any other baby, and “with no language but a cry.”

The professor-inventor, who had thus rescued the tiny foundling of science, was a young Scottish American. His name, now known as widely as the telephone itself, was Alexander Graham Bell. He was a teacher of acoustics and a student of electricity, possibly the only man in his generation who was able to focus a knowledge of both subjects upon the problem of the telephone. To other men that exceedingly faint sound would have been as inaudible as silence itself; but to Bell it was a thunder-clap. It was a dream come true. It was an impossible thing which had in a flash become so easy that he could scarcely believe it. Here, without the use of a battery, with no more electric current than that made by a couple of magnets, all the waves of a sound had been carried along a wire and changed back to sound at the farther end. It was absurd. It was incredible. It was something which neither wire nor electricity had been known to do before. But it was true.

No discovery has ever been less accidental. It was the last link of a long chain of discoveries. It was the result of a persistent and deliberate search. Already, for half a year or longer, Bell had known the correct theory of the telephone; but he had not realized that the feeble undulatory current generated by a magnet was strong enough for the transmission of speech. He had been taught to undervalue the incredible efficiency of electricity. Nothing so far to the current PDAs and cell phones(moviles) that work without plug-in to the socket and last hours, days and even weeks.

Angelina Jolie on your Cellphone Anyone?
by: Robert Armstrong

The titanic developments in new technology have radically changed the way we watch TV and movies at home. Gone are the days when the TV set was a box in the corner with a 20in screen and a tinny speaker. Now most of us prefer to watch movies and sports casts on a widescreen that’s at least 28in from corner to corner. If you are a fan of home theater then that screen will almost certainly be bigger and be accompanied by a surround sound speaker system to maximise the aural effect and immerse you in the action. As technology improves and equipment becomes cheaper, more and more people will have high definition TVs and home theater set-ups.

However, if Sony has its way, we’ll all be enjoying a completely different movie-watching experience, on a 2inch mobile phone screen. Sony wants to see an iTunes-style download service for movies so we can download them and watch them on the move. Would you watch a film on a cellphone? I wouldn’t.

Imagine it. Out would go the immersive, involving experience of the movie theater that we’ve tried so hard to create at home, and in its place would be a screen so small that it would be difficult to make out what was going on. That in itself would create a dilemma for film-makers. If a sizeable number of people who pay to see a movie do so by downloading it on their mobile, will directors have to take this into account when making it? Will studios reject cuts because they contain too many subtle facial expressions or movements that can’t be detected on a tiny screen? Will the muted colors of a Saving Private Ryan have to replaced with more lurid and brightly colored scenes to make them more easily visible on a cellphone?

And what of the audio? Is their any point in spending time and money developing a detailed and textured surround-sound experience if a significant portion of your audience will be listening on earbuds while travelling on a train?

These examples may be extreme, but they do highlight the differences between the way a music download service works and the way a movie download service would. Music, by its nature, is immensely portable. OK, the sound quality from an iPod over a pair of earbuds may be nothing compared to that from a decent hi-fi set-up, but for most people most of the time, it’s a close enough approximation. That won’t be the case with movies. Why did those tiny, battery powered, pocket TVs never really take-off? For the same reason.

Apple CEO, Steve Jobs, who knows a thing or two about the movie industry through his stewardship of Pixar, has often said that he’s not interested in producing a video iPod because no-one wants to watch movies on a small screen. Jobs is right about most things, and I think he’s right about that. Sony disagrees. It will be interesting to see who’s right.

Tips On Choosing Your Own Cellphone Plan
by: Jason Allen

Choosing a cell phone plan can be confusing. There are so many different options and plans out there. The only way to come up with the plan that is a good match for you is to determine how you use your phone and what you want in a plan. There is no use paying for more than you need, or short changing yourself so you have to curtail calls or pay for overages.

Most cell phone plans split their minutes between peak and off peak times. Off peak minutes are unlimited with many providers today. Many providers also offer free mobile to mobile calls which allow for free calls among members of the same cell phone provider on peak or off peak times. The peak minutes are sold in blocks of various amounts and prices; this is a point to use for comparison among providers and plans.

Realize that the start and end time for peak minutes may vary among providers. If you find your predicted usage falls between two plans, it is recommended to choose the plan with the most minutes since paying for overage can be more expensive than paying for the extra minutes.

If you plan to use your cell mostly during the evening and on weekends then you would be a good match for an off peak cell phone plan which may also be called a night and weekend plan.

Another comparison point among providers is free long distance. Most cell providers offer free long distance today. But you will need to verify this with your provider to make sure you did get hit with overages. Also compare roaming policies among providers. The ideal situation is to pay no roaming fees and more and more companies are adopting this policy.

You may wish to buy a family plan if you would like to share minutes with other family members. It can be less costly than have a separate plan for every member of your family. And finally, if you just want a cell phone for emergencies and don’t plan to talk on it very much then consider a prepaid plan.

Free Cell Phones, How can you find the Best Cellphone Deals?

Have you had a chance to look at any of the cell phone offers lately? The free cell phone offers that are available today are very imaginable. Some of them you have heard of and some you haven’t. Just about every cell phone provider will give you a free cell phone when you sign up for their service such as Samsung, Verizon, Motorola, U.S. Cellular and Sprint just to name a few. Here are some examples of some of the companies that you can choose from to get a honey of a deal:

AT & T

This company has a free pink RAZR cell phone when you open a new account. Free shipping is offered as well as a Bluetooth headset when you arrange to have service with them.

1.) Another free cell phone that you can get when you open a new account with AT & T is a Black Berry pearl red phone.

2.)When you activate a new account with AT & T, you can get a free Motorola V3 RAZR, which is valued at $320.b.

3.)You will also be able to choose a Sony Walkman style phone when you open a cell phone account with AT & T.

T Mobile

This company offers a free Nokia wireless cell phone if you sign up for their service. This offer includes free FedEx shipping.

Sprint

If you activate a new cell phone account with Sprint, they will give you a free Sanyo Katana II pink cell phone that has a value of $199.

1.)When you activate an account with Sprint, you also have the choice of a free Samsung M300 red cell phone which includes a Jabra Bluetooth headset.

2.)You can get a Samsung Upstage M620 that retails for $99.99 but after the activation and mail in rebates, you end up getting this cell phone for free.

Verizon

You can receive an LG Chocolate cell phone, valued at $299, for the price of $49.99. However, after your service is activated with them and you send in your rebates, your will get the cell phone for free.

These carriers are just a few of the best cellphone deals that are available today. If you do a Google search, you will find that the offers are numerous. Your e-mail box is probably full of offers from different cell phone companies that are offering their best free cell phone deals as well as cheap cellular phone deals on a daily basis.

Since so many cell phone companies are competing for your business, cell phones have become much more affordable over the last several years. If you are only concerned about using a cell phone for emergencies there are cell phone plans that are available that have as little as 450 minutes a month at a very reasonable cost. Various agencies have cell phones that only have 911 services if you just want to use one in case of an extreme emergency.

One very good cheap cellular phone deal is a mobile plan where you are able to call others who have the same service as you have for free. This way you do not have to worry about using minutes when you talk to family and friends. Most of these companies will let you rollover any time you have left over. This kind of cell phone would be a great gift for your parents who live in another state. You will also have the peace of mind that they are all right since you will be able to call and check on them especially if they are elderly.

Just about every teenager in today’s society thinks that a cell phone is an absolute necessity. It seems that all of their friends have them so they have to join the crowd! You can find affordable plans for your teenagers and even your pre-teens so as to avoid any embarrassment in front of their friends. There are many cell phone deals that offer a service that will allow you to choose so many friends and family that you may call for free. If you have watched TV lately, you will find that these plans have become quite popular.

If you are looking for affordability, then consider getting a family plan. A family plan works this way. You pay one price for a certain amount of minutes that are shared between two or more cell phones for just one price. There are some plans today that offer extra cell phones free when you decide to go with a family or shared plan. These are excellent ways to keep in touch with your spouse or your children especially in these days when everyone is so busy with school, work and all of those extracurricular activities.

If people happen to be traveling, they may be on the lookout for cheap cellular phone deals. This is truly a lifesaver if you happen to get lost or break down. Keeping safety in mind, it would be a good idea to keep a mobile phone in your car at night in case it would break down or if you are in an area that is not well traveled.

It is possible to track someone’s whereabouts using their cell phone. For some people this can be seen as an invasion of privacy, but it can serve its purpose in the event there happens to be a kidnapping or an unexplained disappearance. Law enforcement personnel could use this tool wisely with the rising rate of child abductions.

Another good point about this technology would be to locate a relative who has Alzheimer’s disease. If you have ever been put in the position of not being able to find your father, mother, grandfather or grandmother then a cell phone could give you peace of mind, which could end up being priceless! People with Alzheimer’s disease tend to wander off and get lost. If you make sure that they have a cell phone with them, which could help you find them before any harm could come to them. The benefit that you may be able to find your loved one far outweighs any idea that you may be intruding on someone’s privacy.

This feature that comes on your cell phone can be disabled if you wish. As with any technology, there are ways to disable anything you do not wish to have activated on your cell phone. Just give this some careful thought before you do this, as it can really be a valuable tool down the road. There can be abuse with this feature, but that is true with just about anything today.

Free cell phone deals are constantly changing. The best way to find the right deal for you is to decide what you are going to use the cell phone for and how much you are going to need it. Then you can do a comparison of all the different plans that are available and see which one is better suited for your budget. Then that will be the right cell phone for you!

You have no doubt heard of the “Baby Boomers”, those individuals born between 1943 and 1963. Following World War II, Australia’s population grew at record levels. Australia was not alone in this phenomenon. The United States, New Zealand and Canada all experienced Baby Booms at a similar time.

The Baby Boomers are an important phenomenon to understand. They have had dramatic effects on society and will substantially impact the way the stock market performs over the next 20 years. For this reason, it is important to understand some of the background on this interesting group of people.

As mentioned, the Baby Boom was experienced in various countries around the world. Part of the reason for the “Boom” was that these countries were immigrant receivers and immigrants tend to be in their 20’s, the prime childbearing years. At its peak in 1957, the US boom hit 3.7 children per family. Canada hit its peak in 1959 with Canadian women averaging 4 offspring each; that was over 479,000 new births that year alone! Australia’s boom was not quite as big as the Canadian or US booms; however, we still have a disproportionate number of people who are today in their 40’s and 50’s. Following the Baby Boom, we had a Baby Bust. Far fewer children were born during the late sixties, leaving Australia with an asymmetrical population graph.

The Baby Bust group, born between 1964 and 1976 are a much smaller group than their predecessors and are commonly referred to as Generation X.

Baby Boomers are a very significant and important group. It is not that, individually, they are any different than any other group who preceded them, it’s just that there are so many of them. Due to their large numbers, Baby Boomers have had a significant impact on our society, making substantial changes as they grew. They have changed the economy, driven housing and other markets and transformed social attitudes and lifestyles.

In Australia and North America today, the fastest growing industries, apart from technology, are financial management, leisure activities and health care. It is very easy to see why. Boomers have been working all their adult lives, usually for someone else. They have raised their children and are now focusing on their retirement. They have had a magnificent time. They have not endured wars, or a depression like their parents and grandparents. They have enjoyed fantastic luxuries such as cars, world holidays and computers. They have been at the forefront of the age of discovery.

Unfortunately, the majority have not prepared themselves financially for their retirements, believing instead that like their parents, they would enjoy a comfortable pension from their employers and/or government. The stark realities are now coming to light. Everybody, especially the Boomers, must take responsibility for their financial futures. Our government will simply not be in a position to provide adequate pension incomes for a growing number of retirees. Today, for every person who is retired, there are four people working, providing income to the government. By 2025, there will be only 2 people working for every retiree. What’s more, the Boomers, as they start to retire, will live longer than any group before them, well into their 70’s and 80’s on average. As a result, it is up to each of us as individuals to take responsibility of our own personal financial planning.

The Australian government has made substantial improvements and preparations for the growing populations. They have introduced a compulsory superannuation scheme which all employers and employees must participate in and which is gradually rising in required contributions, but it will be too little, too late. The key to investment growth is time, a luxury many Boomers no longer possess.

Consider this fact, that at a return of 8% per annum, net of tax, an investment of $30,000 would require over 15 years to triple in value, not even considering the effects of inflation. Most investment strategies commonly promoted to the public boast returns of 4% to 10% per annum. We often see managed funds, superannuation schemes, bank term deposits and property investments offering such results. Many people consider these returns appropriate and even good! Unfortunately, many members of the public require a much greater return on their investments to adequately improve their financial positions before they retire (if they can ever afford to!).

In future issues we will explore ways of generating high returns and how to self manage your own super.

I didn’t fully comprehend the need – or the satisfaction that came with it – to bond with my child until he was born and I held him for the very first time. But although the bonding began that day in the delivery room, it didn’t end there.

The parent-baby bonding process takes time. But that process will probably be one of the most rewarding times your life. The moments when your baby stops crying when he sees you walk around the corner, smiles at you for the first time, and falls asleep contentedly on your shoulder are priceless. They are all indications that your baby feels safe and loved in your presence.

They are all signs that you have bonded.

In those precious first weeks of life, your baby responds to you using all five of her senses. Here are some ways to engage her in each one and ensure the emotional attachment you create with your child is healthy –and rewarding – for you both.

1. SOUND – Your baby has been hearing you speak for months before he was born. Chances are he already recognizes the sound and tone of your voice. By speaking gently to your baby or singing lullaby’s to him, even when you are out of his range of sight, you are letting him know you are there. He trusts your voice and every time he hears you, it bonds you to him. And it won’t be long before he talks back.

2. TOUCH – There is little that soothes a baby more than when you pick her up and hold her close. The security she feels increases each time you respond when she cries, rock her to sleep, or let her curl her hand around your finger. Also, research indicates there are many benefits to nurturing your baby with infant massage. This can also be a wonderful time of bonding with your baby. Check into local classes or conduct online research regarding the techniques of infant massage.

3. SIGHT – Is there anything that can compare with the moment when your baby locks his eyes with yours and breaks into a smile? Focusing your gaze on your child sends the message that he has your full attention which is essential for creating a bond with your child. He needs to know he is the center of your world and maintaining eye contact tells him that he is, indeed.

4. TASTE – Of course, breastfeeding is the way your baby will bond through taste. Your milk has a distinct taste that she immediately becomes accustomed to because that taste also is her primary source of nutrition. But even if you don’t breastfeed your baby, the formula you use will become the tasting bond for you and your child. While it’s true that anyone is able to feed a non-breastfed baby, when combined with the other four senses, your child will feel especially secure when you’re the one holding the bottle.

5. SMELL – We all have a unique scent to our bodies and it doesn’t take long for your baby to know yours. It is especially important not to wear perfumes around your baby that might turn him off to you or cause you to be more unrecognizable to him. Clean and fresh is better and promotes a more familiar – and gentler – atmosphere for your baby.

The opportunity to bond with your newborn lasts only for a time and then is gone, forever. Whatever you do, make the most of each moment and savor the special time you have together.
